Brands can calculate the Share of Shelf by assessing the number of their product facings to the total number of facings in that product category.
In the laundry detergent aisle of a supermarket, a brand is displayed with six facings side by side on the shelf along with other detergents of different brands. The total number of facings for all laundry detergent brands on the shelf is 20.
SOS = (Number of facings of the brand/Total number of facings)
x 100%
= (6/20) x 100%
= 30% SOS
Area SOS calculates a brand’s visibility by comparing the total area occupied by the brand faces relative to the total surface area of the shelf allocated to the product category.
In the snacks aisle of a convenience store, the length of the shelf is 120 centimeters, and the depth is 40 centimeters. A brand’s chips collectively occupy a surface area of 2,400 square centimeters.
Area Share of Shelf: (Surface Area of the brand’s product/Total surface area of the shelf) x 100%
= (2400 cm sq/120cm x 40cm) x 100%
= (2400 cm sq/4800 cm sq) x 100%
= 50% SOS
